00:00:00.320 --> 00:00:03.839
So, why are you not seen as a coach yet?
00:00:04.080 --> 00:00:14.080
So, I've been thinking about this question a lot, mostly because I have people who are brand new to coaching all the way through, like very experienced master level coaches who ask me this question all the time.
00:00:14.320 --> 00:00:17.280
I actually got one of the very specific questions last week.
00:00:17.440 --> 00:00:19.760
And the way it described it, they said it was super helpful.
00:00:19.839 --> 00:00:21.679
So I wanted to bring it here to the podcast.
00:00:21.839 --> 00:00:24.960
Now, the truth is, is this matters more than you think.
00:00:25.120 --> 00:00:30.879
Because if people don't see you as a coach yet, they're not going to reach out, they're not going to hire you, they're not going to ask for your help.
00:00:31.039 --> 00:00:35.280
And really, it can like really blunt your confidence in the beginning, especially.
00:00:35.520 --> 00:00:37.520
So that's why today we want to talk about it.
00:00:37.759 --> 00:00:45.600
If you ever had somebody that maybe you've been talking to, and then all of a sudden they tell you with a real huge excitement of like, oh my God, I just hired a coach.
00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:48.719
And it's a coach that does something very similar to what you do.
00:00:48.880 --> 00:00:50.640
Well, then we need to talk about it today.
00:00:50.799 --> 00:00:53.359
So, guys, welcome to Modern Leadership Coaching.
00:00:53.439 --> 00:00:57.200
I'm Mark, my beautiful, amazing wife, Teresa.
00:00:57.359 --> 00:00:58.159
She is not going to be on.
00:00:58.240 --> 00:00:59.679
You guys are going to be stuck with me today.
00:00:59.840 --> 00:01:02.320
She just went through surgery, but she is doing great.
00:01:02.479 --> 00:01:04.400
She's a warrior and she'll be back here soon.
00:01:04.560 --> 00:01:17.120
But in the interim, I wanted to step in and really share not only some common questions that people have been asking us, like this one today, but really help you to make the impact that you truly want to make, not only in other people's lives, but in your life as well.
00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:24.480
Now, for anybody who's been listening to the podcast for a while, you know that what we talk about here is what it actually takes to grow as a coach and a leader.
00:01:24.640 --> 00:01:27.439
Because I really do believe that the world doesn't need more coaches.
00:01:27.599 --> 00:01:30.400
It needs more people who can be trusted with this level of influence.
00:01:30.640 --> 00:01:37.680
Coaching is a responsibility and we can do amazing things with it, but we can also steer people in the wrong direction if we don't do it right.
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:39.519
And that is why we are here.
00:01:39.760 --> 00:01:41.359
We are here to help you do that.
00:01:41.599 --> 00:01:47.200
Now, I do want to say before we go into this topic, leaning forward into the podcast, that we're going to be changing things up a little bit.
00:01:47.359 --> 00:01:53.519
Generally, what we'd be doing is we would be posting videos and trainings and whatnot on YouTube and then repurposing them into the podcast.
00:01:53.680 --> 00:01:57.439
But we wanted to make a little bit of a direction change because we know that we can go deeper into a podcast.
00:01:57.519 --> 00:02:00.319
We can really help people out on a just another level.
00:02:00.480 --> 00:02:05.599
Plus, it's so much easier to just put in some earbuds while you guys are listening, as opposed to having to watch a video on YouTube.
00:02:05.680 --> 00:02:08.479
So we're going to be doing very specific podcast-only content.
00:02:08.560 --> 00:02:12.240
So if you enjoyed today's episode, definitely subscribe so that you can continue to get this.
00:02:12.400 --> 00:02:22.800
We're going to be continuing to do it every week, but it's going to be more around things that people who are either wanting to get into coaching or people who are currently coaching could be holding them back, but really how to take their impact to the next level.
00:02:22.960 --> 00:02:31.840
Now, here's the thing when we talk about this topic today, this whole idea of like you're not being seen as a coach yet, um, I don't want you to think of this in terms of shame or guilt.
00:02:32.080 --> 00:02:39.840
What we like to do here is just bring awareness to things that might be happening in the background that you actually don't know are going on, right?
00:02:40.080 --> 00:02:47.599
And so when I was having this conversation with a client, and they were basically saying, and by the way, they didn't say exactly like, hey, I'm not being seen as a coach yet.
00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:53.759
They're saying that they're struggling with finding clients, that people are not reaching out to them and having conversations around how they can hire them.
00:02:53.919 --> 00:02:59.280
They're jumping into conversations and then later finding out that that person hired a different coach, these kind of things, right?
00:02:59.360 --> 00:03:03.039
And by the way, that's gonna happen no matter if you do what it is that we're gonna talk about here today.
00:03:03.199 --> 00:03:14.400
It's just that when you lean into this, you're gonna have a much less of a chance of doing that and going down that path where somebody is either not gonna know that you're a coach or not gonna want to hire you if you employ some of the things that we're gonna talk about here today.
00:03:14.479 --> 00:03:14.960
All right.
00:03:15.120 --> 00:03:18.639
I've broken this down into four very simple pieces, all right?
00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:19.840
Four very simple pieces.
00:03:20.000 --> 00:03:36.319
Now, for anybody who's been listening to the podcast for a while, you know that when we are really trying to help people, when we're stepping into becoming a high impact coach, we know that there's two potential problems that somebody can experience when it comes to where they are, where they want to get to, right?
00:03:36.479 --> 00:03:38.080
And that middle gap, right?
00:03:38.240 --> 00:03:41.439
Now, a lot of us think that what we have is a technical issue.
00:03:41.599 --> 00:03:46.319
A technical issue is like steps, processes, frameworks, questions.
00:03:46.560 --> 00:03:48.479
It's the technical, what do I do?
00:03:48.639 --> 00:03:49.120
Right.
00:03:49.439 --> 00:03:53.360
Most of the time, we do not have technical challenges.
00:03:53.599 --> 00:03:54.319
We think we do.
00:03:54.479 --> 00:03:56.960
What we actually have is an adaptive challenge.
00:03:57.120 --> 00:04:01.360
And what this means is we have to be willing to believe or to think different.
00:04:01.520 --> 00:04:08.639
And really, it has a lot to do with the be do-have principle, has a lot to do with like who we are when we do those things.
00:04:08.960 --> 00:04:12.400
I was talking on a previous podcast about losing 100 pounds.
00:04:12.560 --> 00:04:14.800
And everybody always asked me what I did.
00:04:15.120 --> 00:04:17.680
They never asked me who I had to become.
00:04:18.000 --> 00:04:30.480
And when you realize that it's who you become, who you are when you do these things, you get to see that the technical solutions are great, but they don't matter if you don't work on the adaptive uh challenges first, right?
00:04:30.639 --> 00:04:42.800
So it's kind of one of those things where you could Google search these things a million times, but just because it's telling you what to do, if you find that you're still getting stuck, it's because you have an adaptive challenge that you're being presented with.
00:04:42.879 --> 00:04:43.199
Okay.
00:04:43.360 --> 00:04:47.519
So as we go through today, I'm gonna talk to you about some of the technical things.
00:04:47.600 --> 00:04:53.680
I'm also gonna talk to you about some of the adaptive ones, but this is gonna be more of a technical-based training than an adaptive one.
00:04:53.759 --> 00:05:03.199
But I am gonna bring this up because whenever I have a one-on-one conversation, it is always me asking questions and finding out and getting to the root of what's actually holding them back rather than just giving a blanket statement here.
00:05:03.279 --> 00:05:07.279
But I do want to share with you how I went through this process with a client so you can see it in action.
00:05:07.360 --> 00:05:07.680
All right.
00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:08.639
So let's get into this.
00:05:08.720 --> 00:05:10.399
So why are you not seen as a coach yet?
00:05:10.560 --> 00:05:13.680
So when we think about that, I think about it in four different pieces, all right.
00:05:13.759 --> 00:05:19.360
And these are very simple pieces, but I want to make sure that you see them all so you can see where you have the greatest opportunity to grow.
00:05:19.600 --> 00:05:24.000
Number one is first off, you haven't actually learned how to coach.
00:05:24.319 --> 00:05:28.959
Now, when I put this list together, I actually had three and I didn't have this one on there.
00:05:29.120 --> 00:05:31.519
But I think this is so incredibly important.
00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:34.639
A lot of times people think coaching comes naturally.
00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:47.439
And I do have to say, like out of, you know, hundreds of people that I've certified and over 13 master coaches that I've certified, very few of them have been able to do this without some kind of training.
00:05:47.759 --> 00:05:49.680
Coaching is just like a profession.
00:05:49.839 --> 00:05:52.639
You have to be willing to lean in and to learn the skill.
00:05:52.720 --> 00:05:54.720
And it's not just asking questions.
00:05:54.959 --> 00:06:01.680
Now, here's the thing like you're going to find some different certifications out there that talk about just getting really good at asking questions and things will surface.
00:06:01.920 --> 00:06:06.639
And if you have a natural gift for that, like I'm all for it, that did not work for me.
00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:13.920
And it doesn't work for a lot of the people that we come into contact with because after people have gone through those certifications, they ask me to get certified through the High Impact Mastery Academy.
00:06:14.000 --> 00:06:18.319
And then they understand, oh, I was just trying to do coaching rather than becoming a coach.
00:06:18.480 --> 00:06:24.480
And so the first step that I always think is so important is you have to learn how to coach first.
00:06:24.639 --> 00:06:26.720
Because you haven't actually learned how to coach.
00:06:26.879 --> 00:06:31.199
And by the way, there's a great opportunity while you're learning to actually share with the world that you're a coach.
00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:38.000
It's very hard to just go out there, ask random questions, and do what we call mentoring, which is what a lot of people think coaching is.
00:06:38.160 --> 00:06:44.000
Mentoring is like talking about your past, what you've been able to achieve, what you've been able to learn, the ways that you learned it.
00:06:44.079 --> 00:06:47.519
All of that stuff is great, but all of that stuff does not address your client.
00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:54.959
That is just you sharing where you are in your current situation, which in occasion is helpful, but most of the time it is not.
00:06:55.199 --> 00:06:58.639
You have to get to the root of what's actually going on with your client and being able to help them.
00:06:58.800 --> 00:07:02.800
And so whatever it is, like being able to learn how to coach, is step number one.
00:07:02.959 --> 00:07:09.279
Now, of course, you guys know we have our high impact mastery academy where we help you not just learn how to coach, but to become a coach and become a master at it.
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:19.040
But there's plenty of other organizations and stuff that are out there that have really great frameworks and they put things together in order to be able to step into the type of coach that you truly want to be.
00:07:19.199 --> 00:07:28.959
Just make sure that it is something that is not just modules to review where you actually get feedback, you get practice sessions, and you get to elevate how you're coaching in the moment, right?
00:07:29.360 --> 00:07:32.000
So that is step one is learning how to coach.
00:07:32.160 --> 00:07:40.079
Now, if you've learned how to coach and people still do not see you as a coach yet, step number two is you haven't told anyone yet what you do.
00:07:40.399 --> 00:07:48.560
So I know this is like super basic, but do you know how many people that I actually have conversations with that they actually haven't told anybody that they're actually a coach?
00:07:48.720 --> 00:07:54.079
Yeah, by the way, I'm not saying like going on social media and saying, hey guys, I just decided to become a coach moment, right?
00:07:54.160 --> 00:07:57.360
I've seen those all the time, and like nobody hardly responds to that, right?
00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:02.079
One of the ways that I do see really being effective is like, let's say you're going through a certification.
00:08:02.160 --> 00:08:06.800
I know for ours, we actually require this from our students, and that is for people to go out and to do practice sessions.
00:08:06.959 --> 00:08:10.879
And just sharing, like, hey, I've decided to become a high impact mastery coach.
00:08:10.959 --> 00:08:16.079
And in the process, I'm gonna have an opportunity to connect with people and to do free practice sessions.
00:08:16.240 --> 00:08:18.160
After this, I'm gonna be charging for this.
00:08:18.240 --> 00:08:25.600
But while I'm going through this certification, I would like to extend it to the first three people to reach out to me to be able to jump on a practice session.
00:08:25.680 --> 00:08:30.959
As long as it's okay for me to record it, I'll be able to help you through any struggle or challenge you're currently going through.
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:32.399
Now, this does two things.
00:08:32.480 --> 00:08:34.399
Number one is it's telling them that you're learning how to coach.
00:08:34.480 --> 00:08:38.080
But number two, it's telling them that you're actually a coach, right?
00:08:38.240 --> 00:08:39.360
You're actually a coach.
00:08:39.519 --> 00:08:41.519
Now we teach something, a little bit of a sidebar.
00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:48.080
We teach something inside of all of our programs that is a three-step process for learning to find more clients, right?
00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:50.000
We actually did a workshop on this recently.
00:08:50.159 --> 00:08:55.120
It's actually, if you listen to a few episodes prior to this, you'll be able to find it, talking about how to find clients.
00:08:55.279 --> 00:08:59.919
But it is meet new people, tell them you're a coach, and ask them if they want your help.
00:09:00.399 --> 00:09:04.080
Those three things is how you actually grow a coaching business, keeping it super simple, right?
00:09:04.240 --> 00:09:09.440
But it starts off with telling people that you are a coach and telling them what you do, right?
00:09:09.679 --> 00:09:11.519
So that is number two.
00:09:11.759 --> 00:09:15.519
Number three, and I think this is actually even more important than number two.
00:09:15.759 --> 00:09:19.120
Number three is you haven't shown anyone yet that you are a coach.
00:09:19.360 --> 00:09:21.759
So the second one was telling them you're a coach, right?
00:09:21.919 --> 00:09:27.519
What this does is it actually plants the seed in them to start watching you and seeing the actions that you're taking.
00:09:27.679 --> 00:09:38.879
So if you've come out and you're like, hey guys, I'm a coach, and then you follow that up with like not being able to coach yourself, not being able to effectively lead yourself through situations, disappearing from social media, doing all those kind of things.
00:09:39.039 --> 00:09:42.960
What you actually show them is that you're not the type of coach that they can depend on.
00:09:43.200 --> 00:09:44.879
So this is something very, very important.
00:09:44.960 --> 00:09:45.279
All right.
00:09:45.360 --> 00:09:50.240
Now I know things happen, things come up, and I know that like there's going to be times where you have to take a step back.
00:09:50.399 --> 00:09:52.080
If it's intentful, it's on purpose.
00:09:52.240 --> 00:09:53.519
Okay, I totally get that.
00:09:53.679 --> 00:10:00.720
But when you're leaning into becoming a coach, you have to really be able to show up and take actions from the level of a coach.
00:10:00.879 --> 00:10:02.639
Now, this means two things to me.
00:10:02.879 --> 00:10:08.879
Number one, if you're showing people you're a coach, number one is you're wearing your coaching hat 24-7, 365.
00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:14.960
I remember when I went to a dad edge conference, I went into the conference, they put us into like little mini breakout rooms.
00:10:15.039 --> 00:10:23.200
And in that breakout room, by the way, when you really master coaching, which is what we really teach coaches to do, you don't have to think about putting your coaching hat on.
00:10:23.360 --> 00:10:24.960
It's just on all the time.
00:10:25.200 --> 00:10:28.799
And I remember having this conversation uh inside of the mini breakout rooms.
00:10:28.879 --> 00:10:34.000
And at the end, one specific person on the right turned to me and said, Let me guess, you're a coach.
00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:36.399
And it was kind of funny because it kind of caught me off guard.
00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:38.000
And I'm like, How did you know?
00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:45.840
And he described it as just the way that I got curious and asked questions, really got him to see a couple of things that he didn't realize was there.
00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:49.759
And he's like, You have to be a coach because of the level of questions that you're asking.
00:10:50.000 --> 00:10:59.279
And so that's what I mean is you're wearing your coaching hat everywhere, meaning at work, meaning with your family, with your kids, with your spouse, anywhere you go.
00:10:59.519 --> 00:11:03.120
When you learn how to coach, really what we teach is learning how to manage your mind.
00:11:03.279 --> 00:11:06.720
When you learn how to manage your mind, you get to bring your mind everywhere.
00:11:06.879 --> 00:11:10.639
And you want to show people how you can help them by literally coaching, right?
00:11:10.799 --> 00:11:13.840
So by being able to do that is really, really powerful.
00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:15.919
Now you're showing people that you're coaching.
00:11:16.240 --> 00:11:18.960
Second part of this equation is actually coaching yourself, right?
00:11:19.200 --> 00:11:20.159
Coaching yourself.
00:11:20.320 --> 00:11:26.559
So I've seen people who have become coaches and afterwards they come onto Facebook or Instagram or whatever to vent.
00:11:26.720 --> 00:11:42.639
Listen, I know that we all need times to vent and to talk to people, but if what you're doing is putting out into the world that you're not a coach, even though you said you were, but you're not able to manage your mind, it's very hard to be able to convince people that you not only have their best interests in mind, but that you can help coach them, right?
00:11:42.720 --> 00:11:47.360
Now, I know one of the hardest people is to coach yourself, which is why we spend a lot of time doing that instead of the certification.
00:11:47.519 --> 00:11:54.639
It's because being able to coach yourself shows people that you can coach yourself, that you could very easily coach them, right?
00:11:54.799 --> 00:11:56.320
So this is part number three.
00:11:56.480 --> 00:11:58.240
So you haven't shown anyone yet.
00:11:58.320 --> 00:12:02.399
And that's by both wearing your own coaching hat wherever you go and coaching yourself.
00:12:02.639 --> 00:12:02.960
Right?
00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:09.919
Now, if people don't still see you as a coach, part number four is you just haven't given it enough time.
00:12:10.240 --> 00:12:12.639
You haven't given it enough time.
00:12:12.960 --> 00:12:14.399
So you've learned how to coach.
00:12:14.480 --> 00:12:15.919
You've been telling people what you do.
00:12:16.080 --> 00:12:19.200
By the way, telling people doesn't necessarily mean like, hey guys, guess what?
00:12:19.279 --> 00:12:19.919
I'm a coach.
00:12:20.080 --> 00:12:23.360
We coach a lot of people to really step into their strengths.
00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:25.120
And for some people, it's live events.
00:12:25.279 --> 00:12:26.559
For some people, it's at work.
00:12:26.799 --> 00:12:31.440
For some people, it's social media, some people it's podcasting, some people it's YouTube, some people it's Instagram.
00:12:31.600 --> 00:12:34.399
Like, we don't subscribe to a one size fit all anything here.
00:12:34.480 --> 00:12:35.200
It's just like coaching.
00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:41.840
Like you can't give people the exact solution to their problems if you actually don't know what their specific problems are, right?
00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:47.600
But when you're doing this, being able to breadcrumb things, being able to plant seeds of like what it is you do.
00:12:47.679 --> 00:12:49.200
Like I was just speaking to a client the other day.
00:12:49.279 --> 00:12:51.440
I had a question that came up from one of my coaching clients.
00:12:51.600 --> 00:12:53.200
All of these kind of things, plant seeds.
00:12:53.360 --> 00:13:00.159
Remember, this won't get people to immediately reach out to you and have a conversation because you actually haven't shown them you're a coach yet.
00:13:00.240 --> 00:13:01.519
You've just planted the seeds.
00:13:01.600 --> 00:13:03.519
But planting seeds is very, very important, right?
00:13:03.600 --> 00:13:06.000
You can't reap any harvest if you don't plant any seeds.
00:13:06.320 --> 00:13:11.519
So once you've told people what you do, the third thing is you've shown them what you do.
00:13:11.840 --> 00:13:16.480
If you continually show them what you do, then you just haven't given enough time.
00:13:17.039 --> 00:13:21.600
Haven't given enough time to have people be there in the ecosystem, all right?
00:13:21.919 --> 00:13:24.399
So these are the four things.
00:13:24.799 --> 00:13:30.000
Now, I know that I talked a little bit in step number one about what if I haven't learned how to coach.
00:13:30.240 --> 00:13:34.559
If you haven't learned how to coach yet, I want to share a free quick resource with you guys.
00:13:34.720 --> 00:13:37.600
We created a video called What It Takes to Become a High Impact Coach.
00:13:37.759 --> 00:13:39.039
Teresa and I both did that.
00:13:39.200 --> 00:13:43.759
It really goes deeper into the standard that we really believe that coaches have to rise themselves up to.
00:13:43.919 --> 00:13:46.879
And it's what actually coaches need to coach well.
00:13:47.039 --> 00:13:49.600
So if that resonates with you, you can grab it in the show notes.
00:13:49.679 --> 00:13:52.960
Or if you go to modernleadership.us forward slash mastery.
00:13:53.039 --> 00:13:58.639
So modernleadership.us forward slash mastery, you'll be able to sign up and get a free copy of that training.
00:13:58.799 --> 00:14:04.320
Talks a little bit about what we do, but also what it really takes to become a high impact coach.
00:14:04.559 --> 00:14:06.159
All right, couple quick things.
00:14:06.240 --> 00:14:08.240
I know that I said that we're going to be answering a lot of questions.
00:14:08.320 --> 00:14:14.159
We're going to be talking about some of the clients that we have been able to help and what has really helped them, some of the challenges that come up for them.
00:14:14.320 --> 00:14:22.000
But if you've got a question, pop into the description if you're on Apple Podcasts or whatever, and you can click on the text that says send a text.
00:14:22.159 --> 00:14:23.759
It will be able to send us a text.
00:14:23.840 --> 00:14:24.879
I'll get a message.
00:14:25.039 --> 00:14:27.200
Ask me any question that you think will be important.
00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:32.960
If I think that it's going to really help out the team, I will make a podcast episode for you.
00:14:33.200 --> 00:14:34.960
And hopefully Teresa will be present too.
00:14:35.039 --> 00:14:38.000
So you can get two perspectives on the same question.
00:14:38.159 --> 00:14:39.120
Now, I also want to say this.
00:14:39.200 --> 00:14:43.120
I know you're very busy, but if you really enjoy the show, a rating review goes a long way.
00:14:43.279 --> 00:14:44.879
So we'd really appreciate it for that.
00:14:45.120 --> 00:14:49.600
And lastly, I just want to say thank you for what you do out there every single day.
00:14:49.759 --> 00:14:57.360
The way that you show up, not just when things are easy, but when things are hard, when you're coaching yourself, when you've got your leadership hat on, when you're making an impact in the world.
00:14:57.600 --> 00:14:59.519
It's not those E times when we do that.
00:14:59.679 --> 00:15:01.919
It's the hard times when we decide to show up anyway.
00:15:02.080 --> 00:15:03.759
So thank you for doing that every single day.
00:15:03.919 --> 00:15:05.919
What we call leading from the front.
00:15:06.080 --> 00:15:06.960
Thank you so much.
00:15:07.039 --> 00:15:08.879
And we will see you on the next episode.
00:15:08.960 --> 00:15:10.559
And hopefully Teresa will be back by then.
00:15:10.720 --> 00:15:11.039
All right.
00:15:11.120 --> 00:15:12.799
Have a great day, and we'll see you soon.
00:15:12.879 --> 00:15:14.080
Bye, everybody.
