00:00:00.239 --> 00:00:03.040
So, how do you build momentum when you don't have motivation?
00:00:03.200 --> 00:00:05.919
That was the question that I literally got this morning from one of my clients.
00:00:06.080 --> 00:00:08.400
And we kind of had a secret sauce behind that here.
00:00:08.560 --> 00:00:12.960
If all you do is wait to feel motivated, momentum is going to come and go.
00:00:13.119 --> 00:00:16.879
But the truth is, it doesn't have to when you do what we're going to talk about here today.
00:00:17.039 --> 00:00:27.519
So let's actually give them some behind the scenes in terms of what we do, not only for ourselves, but for our clients to help us, not only when it comes to motivation, but most importantly, like how to create and continue that momentum.
00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:28.879
Because that's a big deal, right?
00:00:28.960 --> 00:00:33.439
If you're up and down, your business is up and down, your relationships are up and down, and your health is up and down.
00:00:33.600 --> 00:00:37.679
All things that I've had happen before I started to take control of it by doing what we're going to talk about today.
00:00:37.840 --> 00:00:38.479
So you ready to do that?
00:00:38.560 --> 00:00:38.719
Yep.
00:00:39.119 --> 00:00:39.520
Let's go.
00:00:39.759 --> 00:00:42.719
So I know you'll do the 75 Hard, right?
00:00:42.880 --> 00:00:43.520
Over and over again.
00:00:43.600 --> 00:00:44.880
I think you've done it maybe five times.
00:00:45.359 --> 00:00:49.759
75 Hard is basically a physically and mentally demanding program.
00:00:49.920 --> 00:00:52.479
So you're even talking about doing that again with our team.
00:00:52.640 --> 00:00:56.320
So when I see you, it seems like you're really motivated to do it.
00:00:57.039 --> 00:01:01.439
So I know that's not always the case, but what's your secret behind you doing that?
00:01:01.759 --> 00:01:06.480
So I know I just put out an email today talking about the 75 Hard and doing it, I think, for the sixth time.
00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:09.680
One time I actually did the 75 Live Hard, which is an entire year.
00:01:09.840 --> 00:01:11.359
And people think I'm a little crazy.
00:01:11.599 --> 00:01:15.040
And the truth is, is like when I put that together, I am excited about it.
00:01:15.280 --> 00:01:18.079
Teresa, not so much, but I am excited about it.
00:01:18.159 --> 00:01:27.439
Um, and it's not because I'm motivated to do two workouts a day for 45 minutes, drink a gallon of water, take a picture, you know, do exactly what I need to do with my nutrition plan.
00:01:27.519 --> 00:01:29.519
Like, that's not my motivation behind it, right?
00:01:29.760 --> 00:01:34.079
However, I do know that there's things that I am motivated about when it comes to that program.
00:01:34.239 --> 00:01:36.959
Because I mean, yesterday we were at the coffee shop, and that's when this came up, right?
00:01:37.040 --> 00:01:37.680
I'm like, you know what?
00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:42.640
75 Hard, whenever I do it, I feel so highly motivated in control.
00:01:42.719 --> 00:01:44.959
I'm taking ownership of the things that I can control.
00:01:45.040 --> 00:01:50.239
And it feels like anything that is quote unquote small or big kind of like just rushes off my back.
00:01:50.319 --> 00:01:51.920
And it just feels like it's not a big deal.
00:01:52.000 --> 00:01:54.799
And I always figure so many things out when I do that.
00:01:54.959 --> 00:02:04.159
And so for me, in that situation, and we're gonna share with you how we can do this, is I just remind myself of the parts that I am motivated about, the outcome that I'm gonna be able to achieve.
00:02:04.319 --> 00:02:08.479
And then when I start getting other people behind me, I send an email and I get like 13 responses.
00:02:08.639 --> 00:02:10.319
I'm in, I'm in, I'm in, I'm in.
00:02:10.560 --> 00:02:15.680
It's kind of like fuels it because I didn't just sit on it and just say, oh, you know, maybe I would do this.
00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:24.080
I actually took action from a place of not being motivated about doing all those workouts and stuff, but like from a place of like reminding myself of what's gonna happen when I do.
00:02:24.240 --> 00:02:26.159
And then wanting other people to do that.
00:02:26.240 --> 00:02:32.879
And then by putting it out there, it created this cycle of not only me taking action on it, but so many other people getting motivated about it too.
00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:36.800
So, okay, so you're saying that you just get yourself to do that.
00:02:36.960 --> 00:02:42.240
But like people think that being motivated is basically they have to wait for that feeling to come.
00:02:42.400 --> 00:02:46.639
They have to wait for that moment so that they can actually take the action.
00:02:46.879 --> 00:02:51.120
So, what is it that gets you to actually say, hey, I'm gonna do this?
00:02:51.439 --> 00:03:00.000
Okay, so this might not be so briefly, but I want to kind of describe to people a little bit about like what people term as like motivation or mindset and what it actually is.
00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:03.840
And sometimes what we find is a lot of what people actually think it is, right?
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:08.560
So when you think about like mindset or motivation, a lot of people think of like how you feel in the moment.
00:03:08.960 --> 00:03:14.080
And how you feel in the moment is fueled by a lot of times what's happening in the outside world.
00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:22.400
So if somebody gives you positive reinforcement, you have a new client who signs up, you lose five pounds, because that situation happened, you now think about yourself in a certain way.
00:03:22.560 --> 00:03:28.000
You tell yourself a different story, it creates that energy or that motivation emotion inside of your body.
00:03:28.159 --> 00:03:32.719
And from that feeling of motivation, then you start taking actions as a motivated individual.
00:03:32.879 --> 00:03:34.879
But that is a fleeting moment.
00:03:35.039 --> 00:03:36.159
It's a moment by moment.
00:03:36.240 --> 00:03:40.000
You can have a moment where this morning maybe somebody sends up to a client and you're super excited, right?
00:03:40.080 --> 00:03:41.599
You're like, my mindset's right, right?
00:03:41.759 --> 00:03:48.319
And then, you know, three hours later, your son, you know, has a a sore throat on finals day and he can't make it there.
00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:50.639
And now all of a sudden, like your world kind of comes to an end, right?
00:03:50.719 --> 00:03:52.560
You're like, oh my God, like what am I gonna do?
00:03:52.719 --> 00:03:56.240
And it's just like it feels like your quote unquote mindset is off.
00:03:56.400 --> 00:04:01.120
And what actually is happening is you're giving your inside control to something on the outside.
00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:14.000
And so when we think about like the 75 heart or any of the things that we do, but also the things we tell our clients, is it has a lot to do with controlling what you can control, which is the way that you think, the way that you talk, and the way that you act, right?
00:04:14.159 --> 00:04:16.160
But it all comes down to the way that you think.
00:04:16.319 --> 00:04:21.839
And so when you're going through this process, like a lot of people give that outside control and then they're waiting for motivation.
00:04:22.000 --> 00:04:27.519
But at any point that you want to, you can go back and you can find the motivation.
00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:37.199
The reason why you said yes in the beginning, the reason why you can do this, like all that different potential, you can go find it if you choose to, if you realize that you have the power to do that, but most people don't.
00:04:37.360 --> 00:04:40.879
This is why we spend so much time in our life and performance certification to really pull this out.
00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:45.040
Because there's the life part of this, which is like being able to think about it on a different level.
00:04:45.199 --> 00:04:51.040
And then there's the performance part where when you ask a question, you can get yourself and somebody else to perform on an entirely different level.
00:04:51.199 --> 00:04:52.480
And so let's actually do that now.
00:04:52.560 --> 00:04:54.480
Let's take them through like a little bit of a mini exercise.
00:04:54.639 --> 00:05:03.839
Cause maybe some people are thinking, well, I could never do the 75 hard, or I've never done anything hard, or I'm not the person type of person who can control my motivation, but they actually can because they've done it before.
00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:06.399
It's just that they're not giving themselves any credit for it.
00:05:06.480 --> 00:05:07.680
So let's take them through that real quick.
00:05:07.839 --> 00:05:08.639
Yeah, so think about it.
00:05:08.800 --> 00:05:11.120
Think about that you've already done this.
00:05:11.279 --> 00:05:17.439
You're like you already do this, and you probably do it on a consistent basis, but you just don't give yourself enough credit for it.
00:05:17.920 --> 00:05:22.480
So think about a time where you wanted to quit, but you didn't.
00:05:22.639 --> 00:05:23.360
Think about that.
00:05:23.600 --> 00:05:26.399
A time that you wanted to quit, but you kept going.
00:05:26.560 --> 00:05:27.600
You did it anyway.
00:05:27.839 --> 00:05:29.839
What actually kept you moving that day?
00:05:30.000 --> 00:05:35.759
And most importantly, what did you actually learn about yourself on the other side of that decision?
00:05:36.000 --> 00:05:42.959
So when we go from think about a time when you felt like quitting when you didn't want to follow through, but you ended up following through anyway.
00:05:43.120 --> 00:05:49.120
I want you to like really think about that because there was a story that you told yourself that got you to take action anyway.
00:05:49.360 --> 00:05:56.399
Now, sometimes what we find is like some people use shame or guilt or like I suck, or like I just have to do this, I have to go to work today, right?
00:05:56.560 --> 00:05:58.079
All of those things are disempowering, right?
00:05:58.160 --> 00:05:59.839
You're not going to feel motivated when you do that.
00:06:00.079 --> 00:06:06.879
So that might be one of the things that maybe you can figure out a different story that you can tell yourself to get yourself actually excited about doing that thing, right?
00:06:07.120 --> 00:06:11.519
But most likely when you go back to that time, you can think about what did I tell myself?
00:06:11.680 --> 00:06:12.079
You know what?
00:06:12.160 --> 00:06:13.680
Here's here's a few examples, right?
00:06:13.759 --> 00:06:20.079
Like let's say you're in a situation where maybe you're at work and maybe your leadership isn't leading as well as you want, right?
00:06:20.240 --> 00:06:24.879
Maybe they're like not giving people the raises that they should give them and all of these other things, right?
00:06:25.120 --> 00:06:28.560
You could accidentally go down the path of like, well, screw them.
00:06:28.720 --> 00:06:29.279
They suck.
00:06:29.439 --> 00:06:30.079
They're terrible.
00:06:30.240 --> 00:06:32.240
This place is just a terrible place to work at.
00:06:32.319 --> 00:06:38.079
And what you do is you actually will have lower motivation and lower momentum, not only for you, but your entire team.
00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:45.439
But you could also think, and this is what I used to think at LAPD on occasion when I have a boss like this, is I used to remind myself, you know what?
00:06:45.600 --> 00:06:51.600
This is the opportunity that I have to lead and not allow this negativity to go anywhere beyond me.
00:06:51.759 --> 00:06:59.360
Because here's the thing I can be the filter between the people that are leading me and the people that I lead so that they don't ever have to deal with this.
00:06:59.519 --> 00:07:03.120
And when you step into that, it creates a different level of emotion because guess what?
00:07:03.279 --> 00:07:05.120
You're telling yourself a different story.
00:07:05.360 --> 00:07:08.079
So the truth here is like you got to find the story that fuels you, right?
00:07:08.240 --> 00:07:09.360
As a coach, this is what we do.
00:07:09.439 --> 00:07:16.079
We ask questions to help not only identify what story is not helping you, what perspective is not helping you, but also find the one that actually fuels you.
00:07:16.160 --> 00:07:19.439
And when you fuel yourself that way, it's not a one size fit all, right?
00:07:19.600 --> 00:07:22.079
We tell them we want them to try the perspective on for size, right?
00:07:22.160 --> 00:07:23.040
Like, is this jacket?
00:07:23.199 --> 00:07:24.319
Do you is it help you?
00:07:24.480 --> 00:07:25.600
Cool, glean into it.
00:07:25.759 --> 00:07:27.839
If it doesn't, like leave it by the wayside.
00:07:28.000 --> 00:07:40.000
But when you look back to the times when you have done this, you might find that there might be a powerful story in there that could help you not only in this area, but every other area that you're quote unquote struggling with motivation because that has a lot to do with like our values.
00:07:40.079 --> 00:07:44.639
And when we can get really near and dear into a perspective that's like, that feels like I can believe it.
00:07:44.800 --> 00:07:49.600
It's something that I know that I'm here and put on this planet to do, something you can use in multiple different areas.
00:07:49.759 --> 00:07:51.680
So that's why we're asking you those questions.
00:07:51.759 --> 00:07:53.600
And then the last one is like reflect on that.
00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:54.480
What does it tell you?
00:07:54.560 --> 00:07:56.959
What is that story that you actually reminded yourself of?
00:07:57.120 --> 00:07:58.399
Like, how else could you use that?
00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:00.399
What other areas could you tap into that?
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:06.800
And that is how you can create the motivation that you need so that you can continue to take that action, which is what creates momentum.
00:08:06.959 --> 00:08:09.199
So here's really what I want you to get today.
00:08:09.439 --> 00:08:13.839
You don't wait for motivation, you build it one perspective at a time.
00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:26.560
This is one of the first things that we talk about inside of our certification, because when your brain starts to get rewired and start using these perspectives for you, not only will you excel in that area you're working on, but it's actually something that's contagious in all the other areas too.
00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:31.040
Now, once you start leaning into this, you now start to have momentum on your side.
00:08:31.199 --> 00:08:32.639
But the next step is critical.
00:08:32.720 --> 00:08:38.399
And that's when certain situations come up, you also have to learn how to rest without quote unquote quitting.
00:08:38.559 --> 00:08:45.120
Now, there's a huge dichotomy here between completely abandoning what you're doing and actually pushing through when you have to give it a rest.
00:08:45.279 --> 00:08:50.559
And we want to make sure that you don't approach this raw, which is why we're dedicating the next lesson entirely to this.
00:08:50.879 --> 00:08:53.039
We'll see you in that next episode.
